The Monterey Cypress, which is the subject of Patrick's lithograph, used for the April 1940 cover on Westways magazine is found in its native state only on the headlands at the mouth of the Carmel River near Monterey. It is a very sturdy tree and those found growing particularly on the cliff tops are often grotesquely contorted by their constant battle with the wind. They have been known to grow as high as 60 some feet and often can be 50 to 300 years old.
