Millard Sheets Mosaics in Beverly Hills (video)
Millard Sheets led a dynamic studio of artists who created memorable art for Home Savings and Loan and other businesses throughout southern California. This video tells the story of Sheets's vision, Howard Ahmanson and Hernando Courtright as his patrons, and the meaning of this artwork for generations of residents and visitors to Beverly Hills. The two watercolors featured in this documentary are from our collection, Gaviota Range, 1932, and Path of Light, Newport Pier, 1927. Gene Crain Collection is a selection of paintings by California artist Millard Sheets (1907–1989) curated by Laguna Art Museum’s Curator of Historical Art Janet Blake, on show in the museum’s upper-level gallery. Hardie Gramatky's "Compo Beach Figures"
Andrew Wyeth called Hardie Gramatky one of America’s 20 greatest watercolorists. Many parents called him a gifted author and illustrator; his “Little Toot” books kept kids entertained for hours. Westporters called him “neighbor.” Though world-renowned, Gramatky loved painting local scenes. Compo Beach was a special place for him and his family. In 1971 he produced a watercolor called “Compo Beach Figures.” After winning an award in 1974, the work was purchased by Joan Neff and Fred Shearer. Learn to paint, paint to learn: Zornes retrospective honors a century's dedication to art and life
"Winter at Mt. Carmel, Utah, 1970," by Milford Zornes, N.A. On Saturday, August 10, from 2 to 4:30 pm, the Grace Hudson Museum will host an opening reception and lecture for the exhibit "Milford Zornes: A Painter of Influence." This retrospective of the long-lived watercolorist and beloved teacher includes many heretofore unseen paintings. Zornes's daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Hal Baker, curated the exhibit along with Museum Curator Marvin Schenck, and will host this presentation of the life and art of this extraordinary creative force, whose career spanned nine decades and covered the globe.
