Berkshire Rapture, 1998, an original watercolor painting by Carolyn Lord.
“Berkshire Rapture” is a studio painting based on paintings done in 1997 in Holyport, England. We were staying in a quintessential, half-timbered cottage, surrounded by lawns and gardens. With the endless, overcast summer days, the colors of the foliage and flowers were especially vibrant. While painting the flowers, I chatted with the gardener who had also worked in Southern California. I learned that British and Californians have different definitions of a well-designed and tended garden, and he remarked that this Holyport garden was unusual because of its atypical coral-pink roses. - Carolyn Lord
