August Dahlia, 2017, an original watercolor painting by Carolyn Lord.
Through the Mendocino Art Center, I taught a watercolor floral painting workshop in August, and I arrived early so I could have time to paint and have examples of completed work for my students. One of the gardens on the nearby street Calpella, was filled with stunning dahlias of all colors, sizes and growth habits. This particular dahlia featured a dinner-plate sized blossom on a knee-high plant. The word “august” can mean either the month of August, or it can mean respected, renowned, or distinguished. - Carolyn Lord
