Arroyo Mocho, 1986, an original watercolor painting by Carolyn Lord.

This was painted in February, in the Arroyo Mocho that borders my neighborhood. The arroyo has always been there but was dramatically altered in the 1930’s because it was a shallow gravel quarry to build the Bay Bridge, spanning between Oakland and San Francisco. Decades later, vegetation such as cat-tails, watercress, black berries, and almond trees have softened the landscape. However, with heavy winter rains, the water rushes through, causes erosion and changes where the water flows and ponds. This scene shows curious birds checking out the newly rearranged arroyo. - Carolyn Lord
