The arroyo has always been there but was dramatically altered in the 1930’s because it was a shallow gravel quarry to build the Bay Bridge, spanning between Oakland and San Francisco. Decades later, vegetation such as cat-tails, watercress, black berries, and almond trees have softened the landscape. However, with heavy winter rains, the water rushes through, causes erosion and changes where the water flows and ponds.
