I went off to college and my parents went traveling! In Rhodes, they were visiting a longtime friend who was an admiral in the Coast Guard. Dad described the girl in `Acropolis' as a `child at Propylea, Athens' and it's fascinating the way the child is looking so directly at the artist as Dad sketched the scene. Recently, a Greek friend told me that this part of the Acropolis [the Propylea is the monumental gateway and was designed by the architect Mnesikles and constructed in 437-432 B.C.] is off-limits to tourists. The painting was part of the American Watercolor Society 95th traveling exhibit in 1962-63. Blake described Dad's technique: `Applying his liquid color in fluid, scrubby strokes thin enough to remain translucent, but slightly thicker than traditional watercolor Gramatky has chosen a scumbling stroke for the texture of the trees. A thinner, streakier version of this stroke is used for the sky. Because this type of stroke retains the impression of the bristles, the entire surface of the painting communicates a sense of vibrant action. The barn is still there attached to the old Victorian farmhouse build in 1868 but the window where the light streamed in is now boarded up. Too bad because this scene really inspired Dad. I couldn't locate Mr. or Mrs. Paige. Serendipitously, in 2008, the painting appears in an auction house and we were able to purchase it. I sent the auction house owner a letter to be sent to the consignor, hoping it was a son or daughter of the Paiges. But I never heard from them and have a suspicion that the letter was never delivered!
