More About This Painting

Based on one in Live Oak Canyon in California, this oak is one more of California’s native fauna. This print appeared as the March 1940 Westways magazine cover. The lithograph process lends itself to the subtitle shades that make up the character of these great trees. In the lithographic process used to print these images the design is drawn on the surface of a very flat polished stone with special wax pencils. After further processing the stone is used to print the image. The original image that Patrick drew was in exact reverse to that of the finished print. The stone is very soft in nature, so there are only a small limited number of prints possible. After they have been produced, the stone is re-polished and used for a new image. This can be repeated many times before the stone is ultimately "used up".
