"Dad also called this `From Weehawken’ since it was painted in New Jersey in August 1938. It was exhibited in a one-man show at the Ferargil Gallery in the same year and was invited to be in the San Diego Fine Arts exhibit in May 1940 as well as a one-man exhibit at Chouinard that year. One interesting aside, you will notice that this is one of the first tugboats that Dad drew on the Hudson River, and within a year he would have taken some sketches and written a children’s book, Little Toot, that G. P. Putnam & Sons wanted to publish in 1939. This beloved children’s book classic, written & illustrated by Hardie Gramatky, has been in print continuously for 66 years. And in this watercolor, I can see the strong style and tugboat personality emerging."

Hardie Gramatky was raised in Southern California. He studied art with F. Tolles Chamberlin, Clarence Hinkle, Pruett Carter and Barse Miller.
